Day 104 -At sea

Thursday, April 24

The Cunard woodpecker woke me up this morning a little after 9 (before I was really wanting to get up).  After I watched the morning show I went out on the balcony.  It was really perfect with a light breeze that was refreshing.  I sat and watched the sea before I put my head back and fell asleep (the "woodpecker" had moved on some place else).  I had planned on going to the 11:00 lecture (on ocean liners) but I did not wake up until 10:45 and I still needed to get ready.

Instead, I decided to eat lunch before the 12:15 lecture.  George McGhee talked about Doris Day.

When the lecture was over I sat in the World Voyage section of the Garden Lounge and finished reading my book.  Then headed down to the library and chose another book by Alanna Knight.

Once again we had about 18 at the Needlework/Knitting group.

Played 4:15 trivia with Brian, Chrissy, Judy and Mike again.  We had 14 out of 19 (one question was eliminated) with the winning team having 15.

Too hot to sit on the balcony in the afternoon.

Evening trivia was hard (Who was the first character to speak in the fourth Star Wars movie? ) and I only had eight correct.  Strangely it had four questions about spin-offs of US TV shows (Cheers, Friends, Star Trek the Next Generation, and the Golden Girls).

Only Lynn, the priest and me for dinner (more and more people at the table are skipping the formal nights and eating in the Lido).  Chatted with Gloria and John, two of my CC friends after dinner.

Tonight was supposed to be a Masquerade Ball but since Egypt was cancelled (and some people had come with Egyptian outfits) they made it a Masquerade/Fancy Dress Ball.  There was a parade of costumes (my pictures were not any good) and a winner in each category.

The show was a variety one with the pianist, Chris Hamilton, and the singer, Phillip Browne.  Picked up my orange juice and called it an evening.

Smooth sailing until next time!

Tonight we gained another hour's sleep.

Day 103 - At sea

Wednesday, April 23

I awoke to a slight thump on my balcony like something had hit the glass.  Looked out and saw a little bird land on the railing.  I have only seen a few birds near the ship when we have been at sea and this is the first one I've seen on my balcony.  We are only a few miles from some small islands in the Red Sea but he seemed to need a bit of a rest because he stayed about five minutes before going over the divider to my neighbor's balcony.

It was quite overcast this morning so I decided to watch a port presentation after the morning show (no sun or pool today).  Then did a few things about my stateroom before heading out for the day.

After lunch in the Lido I sat in the World Voyage section of the Garden Lounge.  Talked with one of my CC friends for some time before heading down for Needlework/Knitting group.  It starts at three and I arrived about 2:20 and there were already about five present.  We had a total of 18.

At the end of Needlework/Knitting group one of our new members said she had seen me at trivia yesterday.  We talked about how hard yesterday's was.  She invited me to join her group today.  So we had a couple from Britain, an Australian couple, and me.  They were much more relaxed than the group I joined a couple of months ago where one woman was the trivia dictator.  We did quite well with 17 out of 20 (the winning team had 18).

After an ice cream I planned on sitting on the balcony looking for the dolphins the Captain said we might see but although still hazy, the sun was coming through and it was too hot.

Went to evening trivia and had 12 out of 21.

All eight of us were present for dinner.  I left as soon as we finished because there was a singalong in the pub for St. George's Day.  They were mostly pub songs I didn't know so I watched the dancing instead.

The show was "Hotel Royale" which I have seen four or five times but enjoyed it again.  I sat in an area of the theatre I hadn't before so I had a different perspective.  Picked up my orange juice and returned to watch the lecture on Deborah Kerr by George McGhee before bed.

Day 102 - At sea

Tuesday, April 22

Today was much like yesterday.  To the pool after watching the morning show.  Much hotter today and far less wind.

When I returned to my stateroom Shirley was still working on it so I went out on the balcony.  I heard the noon horn blowing and the next thing I knew it was 12:45!

Had to go to the Purser's Office because I had killed yet another keycard.  The same lady has helped me three out of the last four times I have killed one.  She is going to start calling me a serial killer!  I also turned in my request for tours in Aqaba and Haifa at the shore excursion desk.

Lunch in the Lido and then to the Library for another book.  This time I tried a mystery by Alanna Knight, an author I have not read before.

Another good turn out (16) at Needlework/Knitting group.

Afternoon trivia was the worst one yet - there were at least four very British questions.  I only had 7 right.  (Which creature can turn its stomach inside out?  Which country's name means "the savior"?). The tie breaker (a number of tables had 16 right) was "How many steps up to Big Ben?".

Sat out on my balcony for awhile.  Sunset was at 7:11 and technically (look it up) dusk does not begin until after the sun sets so I did not get reprimanded for having my curtains open.

Did better at early evening trivia with 12 out of 20. (In what movie did David Bowie play the Goblin King?  What "first" did asparagus have in the UK?)

Seven for dinner tonight (only Hilda was missing).  I went to the show tonight.  It featured a singer, Rebecca Storm.  She has been in a number of musicals in the UK.  She was ok.

I have been asked about the gentleman I spoke with in the laundrette yesterday.  He said there was not much difference between QE and QV except that the QV has a better area for the full World Voyage passengers.  Where we have a section of the Garden Lounge, QV has a separate room with good views.

Smooth sailing until next time!

Day 101 - At sea

Monday, April 21

Woke up at 9:20, watched the morning show and then headed for a couple of hours by the pool.  The wind was stronger than it had been for some time and it was blowing the pool water into my face as I swam.

During the Captain's noon announcements we were told that the Code Red had been lifted.  As I walked through the Lido the cling wrap had been removed and you could get your own tea/coffee/water/ice cream.

After changing I went back to the Lido for lunch.  It is so nice to serve yourself again.  As happy as I am the crew must be even happier!

Talked with Hilda and Jim in the World Voyage lounge for awhile and then to Needlework/Knitting group.  We had nineteen today and a couple of the regulars were missing!

Then to 4:15 trivia.  Not bad with 14 out of 20 correct. (What is bogyphobia?  Where is the game kabbady played? )

Had an ice cream and finished my book and returned it to the library.

Returned to my stateroom just before six and thought I would check on the situation in the laundrette.  A man was taking his things out of a washer so I was able to put mine right in.  We talked for awhile.  He and his wife had done the first half of the World Voyage on Queen Victoria, switched to the Queen Elizabeth in Brisbane and in Southampton will take the Queen Mary 2 back to the US.  He told me about their experiences in the South American portion of the voyage.

Only four of us for dinner tonight so we finished very early (9:35).  Hilda and I sat and talked for a bit and then watched the dancing in the Queens Room.  Picked up my orange juice and was back in my stateroom by 10:00.  The show tonight was a piano player but I decided not to go.

Today was Queen Elizabeth II's 88th birthday (her real birthday - the official one is in June).

Smooth sailing until next time!

Day 100 - At sea

Easter Sunday, April 20

I love sea days!  I slept late, watched the morning show, watched the Kenneth Vard lecture on the French liners Normandie  and Ile de France, and sat out on my balcony until 10:45.  I even had a blueberry muffin and a couple of pieces of English bacon for breakfast.

Headed up to the Commodore Club at 11:30.  Today was our last Cruise Critic Meet and Greet.  We had a great turn out with about 25 people (we took up most of the port side of the Commodore Club).  I want to thank Maggiemou for hostessing all of the Meet and Greets we have had.  Most people sat around talking and we did not break up until 1:30.

Then to the Lido for lunch (they had very tasty ham which seemed appropriate for Easter).  I was taking a picture of the Easter display in the Lido when Paulo, one of the Lido waiters, wanted to take a picture of me with the display.  I've had my picture taken more in the last few days than all of the rest of the trip put together!

I then went to the photo gallery to look at the two pictures I had taken at the World Voyage Gala Dinner.  I am not sure if I will buy them or not ($24.95 each).

Then to Needlework/Knitting group.  We have a new Social Hostess, Lauren, and many new members.  About sixteen showed up which is more than we have had for some time.  They seem like a nice group and many different kinds of handwork were being done.  I am going to go around and look at everyone's work over these coming sea days.

4:15 trivia was in the Garden Lounge because football (soccer) was being shown in the pub.  Lots of new trivia enthusiasts!  I only had eight correct (what are you afraid of if you suffer from panophobia?)

I hadn't been to the casino in ages so I thought I would go and lose some money but the machines did not like my keycard (I seem to be jinxed when it comes to having working key cards).  I was told previously that the slot machines are more sensitive in reading the cards than the doors but I have a feeling my card's going to die soon.

When I finally returned to my stateroom. there were two chocolate eggs and a card.

It is very windy today and they even had warning signs on some of the doors to the outside decks.  I sat out on my balcony for quite some time despite the wind which was actually very cool just before sunset.

At about 6:30 Shirley knocked on my door and reminded me I had not closed my curtains (don't want to attract any pirates).  How the heck did they know I hadn't closed them????

Early Evening trivia was also in the Garden Lounge.  I did better with 13 out of 21.

At dinner we had six present.  The couple that joined us last night have moved to a two top.  We had some man who is doing the World Voyage although I have never seen him before.  All the waiters seem to know him and he eats at any table he chooses that has space.

There was an Easter Dance in the Queens Room.  I stopped and watched for awhile after dinner and there were many couples dancing.  Then to the evening show (I have not been to many recently).  There was a very talented singer named Phillip Browne who sang show tunes, Nat King Cole, gospel, and more.  He has appeared in many West End shows (like Broadway in New York) and has an amazing voice.  Picked up my orange juice and then watched Sir Alan Collins lecture on the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

I am including some pictures of the Easter decorations today.

Day 99 - Dubai, UAE

Saturday, April 19

I booked the "Dubai, the Golden City" tour so I had to be up early (for me) at 8:00 (once again I did not get my eight hours).

The tour was very interesting.  Last night at the dinner I noticed that none of the people working at the hotel looked to be local.  Today I found out why.  The UAE has made so much money from oil (which was discovered in the mid 60s) and other ways, that the people who work in stores, restaurants, building roads or whatever are foreign workers.  There are more foreign workers in Dubai than citizens.  The government provides the citizens with all kinds of perks and they do not need to do the required day to day jobs.  Our tour guide was a foreign worker from Egypt and our bus driver was from India.

Dubai is one of the seven emirates in the UAE.  The oil in Dubai is supposed to run out by 2030 but it has an economy that is based on many factors besides oil so Dubai continues to grow.

The cost of gasoline here is the equivalent of US$1.55 a gallon.  You can be fined if you do not keep your car clean.

We started the tour with a photo stop at one of the public beaches to see the Burj Al Arab Hotel.  Then a photo stop at the Jumeirah Mosque.  We had glimpses of the high rises of Dubai including the Burj Khalifa which is currently the tallest building in the world.

Then we headed to the old part of town.  We toured through the Dubai Museum which traces the start of the settlement as a trading and pearl diving center.  The museum is housed in the Al Fahidi Fort which is one of the oldest buildings left.  We saw examples of the wind towers that were used to bring in cooler air before air conditioning.  While going through one of the old doors of the fort with metal studs on it, another person and I bumped into each other.  My elbow got scraped and bloody even though it didn't really hurt.   After having free time to look at the exhibits we walked to the Abra (water taxi) that took us across Dubai Creek.

We had free time to walk through the spice souk and then walked to the gold souk.  Some of the gold pieces were outlandish.

We returned to the ship a little before two and I spent my last 100 Dirham (the local currency) at the two little shops in the cruise terminal.

Back onboard I purchased the soft drink package for this last segment at the Golden Lion Pub.

After putting my purchases in my stateroom it was time for lunch in the Lido.  But where were my glasses?  After contemplating a fuzzy month with no glasses before I got home, I decided to go back to the pub.  Sitting right on the bar were my glasses (big sigh of relief).  While there  I met up with two of my Cruise Critic friends (Maggiemou and her husband) and we talked about what we had done today.

After lunch I sat in the small lobby between the pub and the casino working on the blog.  One of my favorite servers saw me and brought me an orange juice.  A little while later two more of my CC friends came by and we talked for some time.

Took my book back to my stateroom and turned in my landing card at the purser's office and then to deck nine for sail-away.  I was sitting and waiting for us to sail when someone came up behind me and asked if the chairs around me were free and I said yes without looking up.  The man asked again and then I realized it was John and Andrea, two more of my CC friends.  They had done the Southampton to San Francisco portion and had just boarded today for the Dubai to Southampton segment.  We caught up on what we had been doing for the last two and a half months.  We finally sailed late (near 7) and the QE and QE2 exchanged horn salutes.

Back to get ready for dinner and got sidetracked looking at my pictures.  Got to dinner a few minutes late.  There were ten of us with a new couple (never heard their names).  Heard the sad news that one of the people who had to be disembarked in Muscat did not survive.  Evidently he had had previous health problems.

After dinner Hilda and I stood overlooking the grand lobby where they were setting up a massive chocolate art display for Easter.

Picked up my orange juice and back to work on the blog.

We have five wonderful sea days coming up and this will be our last long stretch of them.😥
